Broken Ozone Layer

Broken Ozone Layer

The ozone layer is a layer that is contained in the skin of the earth stratosphere. Consists of molecules Ozone (O3). This layer is located at an altitude of 15-60 km above the earth's surface. The ozone layer can function as a barrier almost all ultraviolet rays emitted by the sun. Ultraviolet rays are emitted from the sun rays with sufficiently high energies.

So when the ozone layer is getting thinner, practically will lead to increasing the amount of ultraviolet radiation that falls to the earth's surface and can lead to negative impacts on the environment and health. The worst consequence on the environment is the change in global temperature (global warming). Where the icebergs in the Arctic will melt resulting in rising sea levels. Gradually the land on Earth would be submerged. Ultraviolet radiation will also affect human health. Such as the incidence of skin cancer, cataracts, and weakened immune system. Ultraviolet rays can also damage plants and reduce crop yields.

Some studies indicate that phytoplankton in the sea, which is the base of the marine food chain, has been under pressure due to ultraviolet. This pressure can have an impact on the human food supply in the form of spoilrd ozon layers. (US EPA, Air Quality Archive). In the presence of the ozone layer, it can reduce harmful ultraviolet rays falling to the earth's surface.

Currently continue to experience thinning of the ozone layer due to the presence of many substances circulating air pollutants in the atmosphere. Air pollutant substances was instrumental in the process of depletion of the ozone layer known as ODS (Ozone Depleting Substances) including; Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs), halons, methyl bromide, carbon tetrachloride and Methyl Chloroform.

Ozone-depleting substances are mostly used as cooling agents, foaming agents, fire extinguishers on the fire department, pesticides, and aerosol propellants. Among the substances had air pollutants, CFCs are the main actors of the ozone layer depletion. CFC or Freon is widely used as cooling agents, among others, used in air conditioner (AC) and refrigerator. In the air, CFC and ODS substances degraded very slowly. Intact form they can survive for years and they move beyond the troposphere and reach the stratosphere. In the stratosphere, due to the intensity of the sun's ultraviolet rays, they will rupture and release chlorine and bromine molecules. Both of these molecules found on ODS substances and is an element that can damage the ozone layer.

The researchers estimated that one chlorine atom can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules. The issue of depletion of the ozone hole has been made by the United Nations International issue for the Environment, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) since 1987.

Well, already quite long. On September 16, 1987, in Montreal held a convention that resulted in an agreement between participating countries for the convention together gradually remove CFC production by January 1, 1989. Now, results of this convention was later known as the Montreal Protocol, and on 16 September made as the basis for the determination of Ozone Day which is celebrated by all people in the world each year.

Oops, do any commemorate! But it also must be lived .. This alert is intended as an afterthought to the condition of the ozone layer in the atmosphere, the earth's increasingly depleted and recollection to the countries participating in the Convention of the agreement under the Montreal Protocol. If the effort in signing a grain deal successfully, It is predicted that the ozone layer will be back to normal by 2050. Well, try and the calculated, um, less than 42 years !! Roughly, it can not be accelerated, yaa ?? Well, that was the discussion about ozone, plus hazardous substances 'to haunt'.

Alas, , scary  .. Just imagine if the ozone layer is getting thinner tuh continue and thus tipis really .. How we are ya. Hohoho .. Ozone is one of the gases that form the atmosphere. Dwiatom oxygen molecules (O2) we breathe to breathe up nearly 20% of the atmosphere. The formation of ozone (O3), a molecule triatom less oxygen in the atmosphere in which many abortion only 1 / 3,000,000 of atmospheric gases. Ozone (O3) can be said also part consisting of three oxygen atoms per molecule. At ordinary temperatures and pressures he shaped blue gas.

Ozone is formed dark blue liquid at temperatures below -112 C, and a dark blue liquid at temperatures below -193 C. Ozone encountered by Christian Friedrich Schönbein in 1840. Ozone is known to attempt to absorb UV-B radiation.

Ozone is formed initially in the ozone layer. Eroded/broken  ozone layer by chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). Ozone in the air serves to hold the ultraviolet radiation from the sun at a level that is safe for the health of us all. That is one of the usefulness of the ozone layer, and many other uses. Please read the other article on ozone depletion and hole.
